Disney Movie With the Highest Death Count
With epic tales of swashbuckling pirates and evil kings and queens, Disney has been capturing our imagination for over 80 years. However, did you know the body count in some of its most revered titles stretch into the hundreds of thousands, making them some of the deadliest films ever produced?
New research from musicMagpie reveals that not everyone in Disney's cinematic universe gets a happy ending. While the studio has never shied away from dispatching some of its most memorable characters, its also been ruthless towards its lesser known roles.
But which is the deadliest film of them all? The team at musicMagpie analysed all 58 feature-length films produced by Disney Animation studios, to provide a deep dive into death in the famous House of Mouse.
1. Dinosaur – 307,148 Deaths
Disney's 2000 film Dinosaur takes the top spot as the deadliest film, with 307,148 deaths! This spine-chilling body count is mostly made up by Lemurs, after a cataclysmic meteorite hits earth and creates a tsunami that destroys Lemur island. In true Disney fashion though, a glimmer of hope remains in the form of one lone family surviving. None the less, the calculations used Madagascar, the only island in the world with a native Lemur population to deduce that this would cause casualties totalling 307,143. This combined with the other 5 dinosaur deaths, brings the body count to a shocking 307,148
2. Atlantis: The Lost Empire – 35,185 Deaths
In second place is Atlantis, which features the decimation of 171 expeditionary crew at the hands of the Leviathan, with another 14 deaths occurring in the final battle between the Atlanteans and Rourke's mercenaries. The bulk of deaths are caused by the sinking of the titular Atlantis, which occurs at the start of the film. Linking this with the Mount Thera eruption, which is said to have been inspired the legend of Atlantis, brings the total up to 35,185.
3. Hercules – 20,010 Deaths
Disney's spin on the story of the ancient Greek hero doesn't skimp on the action, with the 'zero to hero' defeating 8 different monsters over the course of the film. Meg, Herc's love interest also dies after saving him from a falling pillar. Thankfully, this character gets a happy ending after a trip to the underworld to rescue her soul. The grand finale is where we see the most deaths however, which sees the Titans attempt to overthrow Olympus. Inspired by the Titanomachy from Greek mythology, this adds another 20,000 bodies to our total.
4. Lion King – 1,660 deaths
Fourth place goes to the Lion King, which features one of the most infamous Disney deaths of all time, where Mufasa is thrown to his death by the evil Scar. Scar has a few more deaths attributed to him throughout the film, but the majority of the body count being caused when Scar introduces a huge pack of hyenas into an ecosystem with few natural predators.
